Paying for Courses

Some courses listed in the Burngreave Learner charge for courses. However, if you are claiming benefits, you may not have to pay fees for courses if you bring written proof of receipt of benefit to the enrolment session.
At Sheffield College (and courses at other venues provided by Sheffield College) courses are free if you are:

  • unemployed or getting a means tested benefit
  • a refugee or an asylum seeker on Income Support
  • taking a basic skills or ESOL course
  • Over 60 years old and in receipt of pension credit.

Courses provided by the WEA (Workers Educational Association) are free for people claiming means tested benefits. Most 10 week WEA courses cost £35 for waged learners and £24 for retired people aged 60 and over.

Adult Education courses at Longley Park Sixth Form College are free if you are claiming: Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support, Working Families Tax Credit (up to an annual income of £14,200), housing benefit, Council Tax benefit or Disability Working Allowance. You may also be able to take the course for free if you are studying for your first Level 2 qualification. If you are a pensioner, you are entitled to a 50% discount.

Adult Learning Grant

If you want to study for Level 2 (GCSE or NVQ Level 2) or Level 3 (e.g. Access Courses, NVQ3 or BTEC) courses for more than 12-13 hours a week, you may be able to claim up to £30 per week to help pay for books, materials and travel. To find out more, call Learn Direct on 0800 100900.
